Somewhere between a prairie and a formal planting.

Dear Wild Ones Enthusiast,

Ecoscaper BrochureWelcome to the Wild Ones Ecoscaper Certification Program. Providing opportunities to enhance our members’ knowledge about landscaping in harmony with nature is always foremost in our goals. The term Ecoscaper refers to the concept and practice of ecological landscaping. With that in mind we have developed the Ecoscaper Certification Program which will allow you to both enhance your knowledge and receive credit for your accomplishments. The intent is to provide a process for self-education about native landscaping, with a goal toward applying your knowledge as an advocate for native plants and natural landscaping in your neighborhood and in your community. You will be on your own cognizance, so choose wisely. Take maximum advantage of this experience.

Marty RiceBriefly, the Wild Ones Ecoscaper Certification Program consists of three educational levels plus continuing education criteria. These levels have been structured to lay the groundwork for your basic knowledge about native landscaping through some basic test questions. Once completed correctly, you will be asked to use that knowledge as a participant in specific fieldwork which will enhance your ability to complete a specific project. Thus, the first three levels contain a written test along with fieldwork and a project to complete the certification requirements. Although each level can be completed at your own pace, we encourage you to complete each level within two years' time, or sooner if you're able.

The fieldwork and project requirements are designed to be new fieldwork and new projects to be completed during the time of this certification process. If, however, you have been deeply involved in the natural landscaping movement for some time and would like to use your past efforts toward certification, please feel free to go back as far as three years. Completion of these sections, however, requires the same documentation as outlined for new fieldwork and new projects.

The continuing education level requires more formal educational efforts along with fieldwork and a project to accomplish completion of certification requirements. This will be an annual requirement to keep your Ecoscaper certification current.

Although not necessary, please feel free to complete the test questions and submit for review before beginning fieldwork or project items. The requirements for the fieldwork and project, along with all their related materials, should be submitted together as a complete package, however. Certification will not be awarded until all three parts of the level are submitted for review and accepted.

  • Level 1 covers the basics of native landscaping including Wild Ones philosophy, and should be completed within a two-year period of time.*
  • Level 2 starts to take you beyond the basics and into some more challenging experiences outside of your backyard, and should be completed within a two-year period of time.*
  • Level 3 gets you thinking more on your own and out into the community, and should be completed within a two-year period of time.*
  • Continuing Education (CE) continues the educational projects with more formal instruction and continued interaction within the community, and should be completed within a one-year period of time.*

*If there are extenuating circumstances which prevent you from completing this level on a timely basis, please request the Ecoscaper Program Committee to consider an extension.

Although much of the fieldwork and some of the projects were developed to be accomplished in conjunction with the local Wild Ones chapters, we are aware that particpants may not always find that to be practicable. So, as you go about developing your fieldwork and your project, please feel free to contact environmental organizations with which Wild Ones has established a liaison relationship to accomplish the requirements of the program. If you are not sure what organizations are partnering with Wild Ones on this program, please contact ecoscaper@for-wild.org for specific information or to suggest a local organization with which to establish a liaison.

Please check the links at the right side of this page to pay your registration fee and to download the appropriate Ecoscaper requirements. If you have any questions about the program, please don't hesitate to contact us at ecoscaper@for-wild.org as soon as possible. Thank you.
